Very much a delicate piece. Take it to a reputable watchmaker and ask them to perform a movement service only, as well as just a clean on the case with no polishing. Ensure that the hands and markers are not relumed (if they have lume.) Ask them to change the crystal, and to provide you with all replaced parts. If so desired, you may ask for a replating of the non chromed areas. From a sentimental/originality point of view this does not need to be done however. Certina were an excellent brand that offered many watches that compared well with Omega at the time.

You did find out that the rotor was switched but had you had the simple knowledge about the serial number system you would have found out this faster. I too had some watches that I wanted more information about so the frustration led to this.

I've just purchased this vintage Certina. It's 34mm in size without a crown and needs a cleaning - it only runs for 25 hours and looses 1,5 minutes/day, according to the seller. Could anyone please help me with identification? The dial doesn't provide any information on the model. I can attach a photo of mechanism, once I get it. So far I only know it's handwinding. Do these hands look genuine to you?

Shum,I would love to contribute into your well spent effort, thank you for sharing. We might shed some light into the earlier periods if we find a common ground of information and I can share Glycine serial numbers from pre-1950s,this might help both of us.But we need to make some research and put our information together to confirm.

The quartz movement also helps to keep the price of the time piece at a low point. For this particular model, the (German) recommended retail price is €715 including VAT. It is more than attractive for a Swiss Made quartz chronograph from a reputable watch brand. The chronometer specifications for a quartz movement are of course more strict than the one for mechanical movements. The strap is black leather with yellow nylon edging and stitching.

Most model lines can be found with the 25-651 movemnt if one want the best but the best bet is Blue ribbon, T+C and DS watches. If it is in excellent working condition it would start from around €70, $100 (it has a very nice dial and is from around 1960) but it could go much higher and top out at around double the starting price, I only buy broken down watches as I'm into fixing them up so I'll drop out a €35, $50. This watch came out befor the Bristol line so it could be the design that gave birth to the Bristol.

I have as a pet project tried to break down the serial numbers of Certina watches as the information is very sketchy saying the least. Some information may be wrong but most is correkt and if you have information that can fill in the holes please feel free to share this information as it will be of great help. One thing that is needed is absolute facts like a specific year a watch was made som we can pin down the serial numbers of other watches.

A fantastic project. I wish I could contribute - I did have a hallmarked gold Certina but sold it and appear to have deleted the pictures. Actually you already have. You made a thread about a Blue ribbon and wanted more information about it but nothing was found. You did find out that the rotor was switched but had you had the simple knowledge about the serial number system you would have found out this faster. I too had some watches that I wanted more information about so the frustration led to this. I was thinking of hording this information as it's literally worth gold as I have found several gold watches the owners thought was plate.

The chromed case (argh!) is not in great shape and it seems that the plating has worn off in many points. Lugs look super sharp to me and I think the watch has never been polished. The case back is in perfect condition with no scratches and all numbers are clearly visible. I don't have neither the original staple or buckle, nor box and papers. The crown is unmarked: maybe is this a replacement?

Until about 1953, the Certina writing on the dial was printed in cursive handwriting, with connected letters. The name 'Certina' is taken from the Latin 'certus', meaning 'assured', 'certain'. Starting in 1954, the modern lettering with block letters in capitals was used, as it is today. In 1958, the lettering was complemented by the well-known logo with the two rotating “C” shapes, one within the other. In order to find a suitable logo, there was a competition created for graphic designers.

What luck for us vintage Certina aficionados that Martin Lovasz has taken it upon himself to prepare such a list, and also that he welcomes our participation. At this point, thanks again Martin for your work! The list published below cannot be absolutely guaranteed since it was created from various individual items. Unfortunately, the exact year can only be determined by a few elements. It takes a personal engraving or proof of purchase to determine the exact year. The more such pieces can be added to the database, the more precise the list will be. We are therefore dependent upon your help.

Rest assured it still counts and displays the 1/10 th once you stop the chronograph. The 10 o’clock sub dial is the 60-minute counter. As a side note GT Master races also run for 60 minutes. This sub-dial has the “Racing Edition” marking. Lastly, the sub dial at 6 o’clock is the continuous seconds’ display. While the other two sub dials have smooth surfaces, this one is ribbed. The model name (DS Podium) in white is here and the words “Chronometer” and “Lap Timer”.
